About our trainer

Neil Lindgren started at Otter Tail Power Company in 1993. Since then he's worked as a Construction and Repair Worker, High Voltage Substation Electrician, Transmission System Operator, Control Area Operator, Transmission Outage Coordinator, and Training Supervisor.

Neil's experience has exposed him to all the elements of System Operations from many different perspectives. As a Construction and Repair Worker, he performed routine maintenance, and new construction of structural elements within both transmission and distribution substations. He worked several projects from the ground up, and being the "low man on the pole" he worked mostly on the ground end. As a High Voltage Substation Electrician, he was responsible for constructing high voltage substations from the ground up as well. With this position he gained experience in every facet of the substation from ground grid, control panel, relay panel, alarm monitor panel construction, to the high voltage device installation in the switchyards. Neil's role as Power System Operator was to monitor operations of the Otter Tail Power Company Transmission System and Generation Facilities on a real-time basis. He was responsible for balancing the Generation and Load requirements of the System, as well as being a member of a team of professionals that were responsible for the operation of the high voltage grid within the Northern MAPP Region. In his role as Transmission Outage Coordinator, he gained knowledge in the dynamics of interconnected operations and the impacts of transmission outages on the remaining system as the region he operated in is largely a stability constrained system. And finally as a Power System Operator Trainer he has gained a vast perspective from the many highly qualified professionals he has worked with and for. In his current role he looks forward enthusiastically to serving your training needs, whether internal to Otter Tail Power Company, or while working with our many neighbors and friends to forward our goal of safe, efficient operation of the electrical grid.

Outside of operations, Neil has served on a variety of committees including the NERC Operator Excellence Sub-committee. Neil has also served on the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO) System Operator Training Working Group (SOTWG) were he gained invaluable knowledge from many other professional training staff representing some 21 different utilities across the Midwest.

In addition to our regular staff, Otter Tail Power Company utilizes many other subject matter experts from throughout the industry. It is through our knowledge of the needs of system operator training, and our skills in organizing these industry experts to present training courses within our region, that we are able to deliver world class training offerings to our neighbors and friends at a level that is economically responsible to all of our regulated utility customers.
